Made these coasters today as a "Christmas" present for my Mother in law. We're headed there soon to celebrate Christmas a little late. I can't wait to see them. It's been almost a year since we've seen them.
Ashley sent me Coasters similar to these for Christmas. I loved them so much that I decided to make some! To make them you need: 4 small square tiles from any hardware store. One sheet of scrapbook paper One sheet of any color felt(You can also use a sheet or cork) Matte or glossy mod podge.(I used glossy...It depends on the look you're going for.) Exacto knife or scissors. Pencil!!! Sponge brush
1)Trace around one of the tiles four times onto the back of the scrap booking paper. 2)Cut out your squares using scissors or an exacto knife. (I used the knife) 3) Use your sponge brush to paint on a coat of mod podge. 4) Put one of your squares of paper on top of the Mod Podge..(Be careful to smooth out any air pockets..This being my first time making them, I accidentally ended up with some air pockets.) 5)Flip the tile over..and if you see any extra paper hanging over the side, use your exacto knife to remove the excess. 6)Add a coat of Mod Podge on top of the paper. It goes on white but it will dry clear. 7)Let it dry for about 20 minutes and add another coat. 8)Trace around one of the tiles four times onto your piece of felt..or cork. 9) Use scissors or a rotary cutter to cut out each square. 10) On the back of your tile put a coat of Mod Podge around the outside and put the felt square on top of it. Do this for all four tiles. 11) Use your rotary cutter to cut off any excess felt. 12)Add another layer of Mod Podge.. 13) Repeat number 12 with at least 20 minutes between each coat until you're satisfied with your results.
Apparently it takes about a month for Mod Podge to completely cure.. So if you are going to be putting hot beverages on your coasters before then you need to spray it with some polyurethane. They sell it by the acrylic and oil paints at hobby lobby. |
